The Downtown Ann Arbor Social District allows visitors to enjoy alcoholic beverages within designated outdoor areas while exploring downtown Ann Arbor. Participating bars and restaurants serve drinks in special to-go cups, which can be carried throughout the social district, including into select retail shops. Designed to enhance the downtown experience, the social district fosters a lively and welcoming atmosphere for both residents and visitors, supporting local businesses and creating a unique way to experience Ann Arbor.

When is the Social District open?

The Downtown Ann Arbor Social District is open from 10 am to 11 pm, daily.

What types of alcoholic drinks can I buy to carry around the Social District Area?

Beer, wine, and liquor can be served in designated containers, such as cans or cups provided by the business, up to 16 ounces. Drinks must be purchased within a participating business or from an approved outdoor bar location on the property of participating businesses.

Can I bring my drink into other stores?

Drinks must be consumed in the establishment it was purchased, or within the Commons Areas before entering another food service venue. However, you’re welcome to bring your drink into participating retail locations that permit it, as indicated by signage on their doors.

Where is the Social District?

The Social District includes most of Main Street and State Street Districts. The boundaries of the Social District are clearly marked.

Can I bring an empty Social District cup into a business to reuse it?

No, Social District containers (cans or cups) can not be reused at any participating location. A new container must be used for each additional beverage purchased.

Can I bring my own drink, pour it into a Social District cup, and walk around the area?

No, the only drinks allowed are those purchased from businesses participating in the Social District program. No outside drinks are permitted within the boundaries per State and local law.

Boundaries of the social district are clearly marked with signage to create awareness of when you enter or exit. Drinks are only allowed within the Commons Areas.

Approved businesses that participate in selling drinks within the Downtown Ann Arbor Social District are listed above and will have this sign on their door.

BEVERAGES WELCOME

Businesses that do not sell alcohol and allow social district beverages will display this sign on their doors.

NO BEVERAGES WELCOME

While not required, some local businesses may elect to display a sign indicating no beverages are allowed.
